Set in Tofino, Andrea Bang's Waverly impulsively decides to spend the summer before medical school with her estranged aunt in the scenic beach town despite her city girl roots. Adapted from the wildly popular novel by Kate Marchant on Wattpad, the low-key but earnest romance hardly breaks new ground. However, its very appealing cast elevates the light romantic material about a lost young woman trying to find herself while learning to swim and falling in love. It's an entirely and aggressively pleasant watch.

Premiering at the 2023 Vancouver International Film Festival as part of the Northern Lights series at the Rio Theatre on Sept. 30 and International Village on Oct. 2.

always thinking about super soldier/healing factor body horror. bones healing wrong within minutes, skin forming over glass and shrapnel. when steve rogers stops the helicopter with his bare hands, his sternum splits and his rib cage splays as his bones give up before his muscles do. sometimes it's less destructive just to leave the bullet inside. how can you perform surgery on someone who heals faster than you can cut? chronic pain is a wicked side effect of an accelerated healing factor as your body is constantly mending and moving everything, everything, everything at a rapid pace. sure the viruses don't affect you, but does your body eliminate them before you can spread them to everyone else? you are always hungry, you are always wired; some days you feel too much, other days you can hardly feel anything at all. everyone knows the metabolism is faster but you'll also run out of air long before anyone else... and just how much can you recover from? maybe your body is more resilient, but your mind isn't necessarily. unless it is, and you're no longer you. just how much pain can you actually take? 'cause you can feel it all. the serum speeds up natural processes; it fixes things but it does not prevent them. it doesn't save you. there are many, many things that it is not a mercy to survive.

i think if they're Gonna keep making Godzilla movies I would very very much like them to do a modern take on my favourite Kaiju, Biollante.

She is the result of a mad scientist, lost in grief, splicing his beloved daughter with a rose and then Godzilla's cells.

Her character was made during the end of the cold war (where fears of nuclear weapons that Godzilla was definitely a metaphor for was waning) and she was very much embodying more contemporary fears about genetic engineering.

I think she's haunting, her story is tragic- and I feel like they've been struggling to marry their human stories with their Big Monster fights in their movies and weave the two together, and Biollante does that perfectly.

Like that's a man's child, that's a little girl- this is a Frankenstein tale. It's gothic, it's horror yet it's still science fiction depicting (I think) very relevant debates about genetics, eugenics, war (she was killed by an American bomb while in the middle east where her dad was doing experiments).
